February is DC Super Heroes month here on Jay’s Brick Blog and I’ve selected Black Manta Deep Sea Strike as the next LEGO set to review. Black Manta Deep Sea Strike is one of the two medium-sized sets from 2015’s awesome LEGO Justice League subtheme. Although the subtheme is named after the powerful alliance of top shelf DC Super Heroes, the sets are chiefly set up to reenact iconic rivalries between the stars of the DC Comics and their corresponding super villains.

Review: 76027 Black Manta Deep Sea Strike – Brickset

This is the weakest DC set of the fantastic new wave by some distance. The minifigures are almost always what sell Super Heroes sets and a few new characters is usually enough to warrant the purchase. Unfortunately that is not the case for 76027 Black Manta Deep Sea Strike as although it contains a highly desirable Black Manta minifigure, this is simply not sufficiently impressive.

The fact that only a single new character is included is disappointing, but probably even more so is the price of £49.99 in the UK and $39.99 in the US. Those of us in the UK (and other countries) often point out the discrepancy in pricing between the US and the rest of the world, but few sets feel the difference quite so sharply. As the set contains 386-pieces even the US price is not particularly good value, but for the UK and overseas it is obviously substantially worse.

…Black Manta Wins … Finally…

First off. I didn’t buy this from amazon. As it was slightly cheaper via my local Toys R’ Us store. As a pretty big Aquaman fan, and a slightly bigger Manta fan I was not disappointed. Its moderately hard to find items for B character DC Villains. As you can tell by the 5 star rating I gave this set, It was a well spent 35 bucks. I haven’t put together a lego set since I was a Kid. and when I opened the box. I was on the fence about what I had gotten myself into.

All in all it took me about an hour or two to put together everything. anyone with slightly more experience would fly through it. so assembly shouldn’t be a reason for second guessing getting this kit. The Aquaman piece made to mock a little slice of Atlantis is good not great. given that its suppose to be the center piece for role playing I found it to be the weaker bit of the 3 main pieces. It swivels as to keep your detainees locked up (or down) I guess that would be the highlight of it. also, it takes the lesser of time to assemble of the 3 pieces.

Batman’s boat is aesthetically pleasing, the harder piece to assemble, the guns are manually driven to shoot and its color palette of black, grey yellow are a nice compliment to one another. My jollies kicked in when it was time to attach to the hub bubble shield. Now, the manta ray. (keep in mind im partially biased) it was a joy to assemble.Every piece. the tubes, the awesome looking dome you put on, the sharp looking fins to give it that rounded look in the front and the guns. the guns are driven by this little pressure lever in the front. the even shoot a few feet. the black and red look make it the center piece on my manta shelf. It comes with a battle shark for lack of a better term. that resembles the imaginex shark with a slightly meaner look and a few bells and whistles.

Many people have likened Guardians of the Galaxy to Star Wars and it’s easy to see why: A ragtag bunch of misfits come together to battle a galactic threat set against the backdrop of alien worlds in space. The term space opera has also been thrown here and there in conversations about James Gunn’s and George Lucas’ cinematic masterpieces.

I’ll leave you to decide whether they deserve to be uttered in the same breath but we can all definitely agree on one thing: the protagonists in both Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy need a really cool iconic spaceship to traverse the universe.

Marvel Super Heroes Review: 76021 The Milano Spaceship Rescue – Regularbricks

Here we are, days before the release of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which is currently sitting pretty with a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. I’m very excited about this movie, and will be seeing it as soon as I can, but I’m not here to talk about the movie today. Today, I’m reviewing Lego set 76021: The Milano Spaceship Rescue. 

I was pretty impressed with this set. It’s well put together and a fairly complicated build, took me about two hours to complete. It clocks in at 665 pieces, five minifigures, and a $74.99 price tag. Having reviewed the other two sets in this line, The Starblaster Showdown and The Knowhere Escape Mission, I must say that I left the best set for last.

On a side note, while I generally prefer printed pieces to stickers, I did appreciate Lego numbering the stickers to match their corresponding placement. This isn’t something I’ve seen before, but it did simplify thing a bit and I hope to see more of it… Read more here

…Awesome Set for Awesome Characters!…

Awesome set. Ronan, Star Lord, Drax and Gamora (plus a generic GoG baddie: Skarrason Trooper)! The Milano it’s self rocks as well… neat use of parts to make wing articulate to give a unique look to it, plenty of room to house all the Guardians (cept poor Groot who has to hang out on the outside of the ship due to size… they should have included a potted plant to represent him inside), nifty boombox in back cargo area and plenty of places to hang weapons on walls.

The small ship for the baddies is pretty neat as well. 2 spring-loaded missiles, foldable wings making it easier to store and canopy for pilot, seems like it almost could have been a cheap $10 or so set by it-self.

Over-all, great set. About same size as the Quinjet set from Avengers line but you can see how much Lego has been improving on innovative ways to make sturdier and more fun to build and play with!

The good news is that the set boasts three fantastic minifigures. Sure, we’ll probably get new versions of Hank Pym and Scott Lang when the Captain America: Civil War sets hit stores next spring, but the Ant-Man set does an awesome job bringing these characters, along with villain Yellowjacket, into the world of LEGO superheroes.

The bad news? The rest of the set is pretty lame. I love the detail in the the giant-sized red and yellow brick-built LEGO pieces, but the large ant is kind of lackluster. …We finally get an Ant-man!…

This small set it actually pretty cool, you get Scott Lang Ant-man, Hank Pym Ant-man (spoilers for the movie maybe?), Yellowjacket, the flying ant, and enlarged lego bricks to be in scale with the figures in mini form. Scott and Hank are the same print, just that Hank is mostly black with a black Helmet, and Yellowjacket is pretty flipping sweet. His only problem is that he’s Back heavy from his backpack and blaster arms.

My only major gripe on this set is the ants wings. The plastic wings are fantastic, it’s how they connect to the body. The two rods used to keep the wings to the ball joint stick out oddly. Nit picking gripe: the any is a hodgepodge of colors. It would have looked better as a solid color. But that’s just IMO. Over all, the set will run you $19.99 and it’s worth it. You get a giant ant and 3 currently exclusive figures. So far this is the only set from te new Ant-man movie (maybe our only one), but I hope they figure out a way to do more with it. I’ve been wanting this movie since Avengers 1 and was let down that Hank wasn’t going to be in the movie. Scott works even better when you think about it.

76016 Spider-Helicopter Rescue is inspired by the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes video game, or to be more accurate, one of the many vehicles within the game. There are two sets in the current Marvel line up that feature Spider-Man with vehicles from the game, the other being 76014 Spider-Trike vs. Electro. Both of these sets also fall under the “Ultimate Spider-Man” subline so it’s drawing inspiration from both the video game and the TV show of the same name.

The box includes three bags of parts, two instruction booklets, a decal sheet and a comic, detailing the adventure and features of the three Ultimate Spider-Man LEGO sets. It’s a fun little extra that I really liked! But on to the minifigures!... Read more here

Review: Lego 76016 Spider-Helicopter Rescue – Brickknight

I bought this set because it was 50% off and comes with a big Green Goblin figure. You also get Mary Jane, Spiderman and a futuristic Geordi LaForge Power Man. Of course, you can’t have a Lego set these days without a helicopter. This helicopter has big wheels on the side with extra rotors. But also some cool missiles and a net launcher. I guess Power Man flies the helicopter and Spider Man swings out of it. His cockpit doesn’t have a floor so you can “launch” him out.

Overall, not a bad set, but definitely wouldn’t have been worth the original retail price of nearly $50 for 299 pieces. I’d rate it a 4 because of the high retail price. You can get it at a reasonable price on Amazon. And now I can’t get this song out of my head:. Read more here

Overall good set. Only set with the Large Goblin (and may remain that way). Boys love it. Not bad for the price even at retail, for a licensed theme anyways. Get it on sale and its a great deal.

Only knock I have on Spiderman theme sets is Spiderman is in every set. Sounds funny or someone may think well duhh…. but the kids feel they really only need so many Spiderman running around, so its kinda a waste when it couldve been another character not done yet. They would rather some themed sets be more like villian or hero sets that are from Spiderman. Thus getting a cool set, but not yet another Spiderman that they dont need when already having 5.

Review – 76042 The SHIELD Helicarrier – Rebrickable

76042 The SHIELD Helicarrier is quite possibly the most anticipated exclusive LEGO set in 2015. Its movie counterpart was prominently featured in 2012’s blockbuster The Avengers, one the most successful installments so far in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With almost 3 thousand parts, 5 minifigures and 12 microfigures, this set surely seems to have a lot to offer. But does it meet our high expectations? Read the full review to find out! The helicarrier is a helium tanker fictional flying aircraft carrier and the mobile base of the S.H.I.E.L.D. agency in Marvel’s popular comic books and cinematic universe. …Is it worth $349. You better believe it is!…

As a Lego enthusiast, this ranks at the top, as one of my all time favorite builds (only behind 8043). Building this set forced me to grab up all my marvel mini figures and load them up onto this beast of a Carrier. This build was smooth and I really only encountered one problem during the build and that came with the installation of the rear lights. I think they are supposed to be angled but am not really sure as the pivot bar underneath is a bit tricky ( I had to reach under and “Snap” one into place as I had not done so earlier. If you pivot the lights straight they start knocking stuff off from underneath.

The application of the main Helicarrier sticker is something I would change. Lego recommends, in their instructions, you first apply the Helicarrier plate then the sticker. If your a perfectionist, like me, you’ll want to first apply the sticker then the plate. Another recommendation I would make is to constantly spin the thrusters to ensure they are working. Make sure the pins are fully seated to get the best performance.

Also, when you are snapping in the thrusters be sure NOT TO GRAB THE INNER RAILS for leverage or you will be going back several pages for a repair as almost happened to me. Bag 12 may have been the most fun as that’s where are the goodies are: Micro Figures/planes/micro fork lift/boxes/cart etc. Not a big fan of the micro figures but OK they make sense. If you are a mini figure nut the Avenger base set is a must. Other than that have fun and if you can get an extra as an investment because this one is gonna be sought after for a long time to come.

…Fun Lego Set to Build and Play With!…

I bought this set for my stepson when he turned 9, right in the middle of the suggested age range. He is a big fan of super heroes, but didn’t have this specific set on his wish list. After looking into it, it seemed like a fun one…fun to build and fun to play with too! On his birthday he was surprised and happy to get it and soon had the entire thing built!

Almost a year later, I was asking him what his top 3 Lego sets were (he has quite a few, including some big Star Wars ones) and this managed to make his list. That’s saying something! There are a lot of cool “areas” and things to do with this set, long after it’s been assembled. Oftentimes Lego sets kind of go untouched after they’ve been put together, but this one has enough interactive elements that it can be played with and enjoyed outside of the building process.

If your son/daughter/nephew/niece enjoys Lego sets along with the Marvel superheroes, they will certainly enjoy putting together the Hulk Lab Smash and playing with it as well!.

Continuing with our reviews of upcoming sets, I am delighted to have received 76049 Avenjet Space Mission from the LEGO AFOL Relations and Programs (ARP) Team to review for you all. Apologies in advance for my lack of photography skills!

This Marvel Superheroes set, which includes a total of 523-pieces is, I believe, inspired by events from the Marvel Avengers Assemble cartoon, though there is no overt mention of this programme on the box, which merely features the general Avengers branding. The box art depicts an epic battle between three of the Avengers – ‘Space’ Iron Man, ‘Space’ Captain America and Captain Marvel, who is piloting the Avenjet – and the villains Thanos and Hyperion against a cosmic backdrop. I’ve finally had some free time for some building and today’s review is on the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Avenjet Space Mission (76049). This is one of the newer Super Heroes sets that has been released so far for 2016 and is based on the Avengers Assemble animated series. The set contains 523 pieces and retails for $59.99. The contents of the box include four numbered bags, a bagged Thanos, a sticker sheet, a comic, and the instructions.

There are four brand-new minifigures in this set including Space Iron Man, Space Captain America, Captain Marvel, and Hyperion as well as a Thanos big figure.

The Space Iron Man suit is loosely based on the Iron Man 3 version, aka Mark 39 (Starboost), but I’m not sure if it has appeared in Avengers Assemble... Read more here

The AvengeJet us magnificent. We get a Thanos, Ms. Marvel, and Hyperion. The Avenge Jet is masterfully engineered, and the min figures are awesome. Thanos’s hover thing is awesome, it fires Lego studs! Captain America and Iron Man in space suits are exclusive. Set full of exclusive minifigures. And the avenge Jet is awesome. The avenge jet is sleek. It also has an escape pod!.

I would rate this set 5 stars if all it had was Thanos. However, the AvenJet and other minifigures are absolute stars as well. The two-ships-in-one design of the AvenJet is cleverly done and the finished model looks very nice. My only quibble is that I never quite got Space Iron Man to fit into the ship like the instructions showed, but that’s not enough to lower the rating. in short: awesome minifigures with excellent Space Iron Man printing, really cool AvenJet, and THANOS!

The LEGO DC Super Heroes Jokerland set is one of the most playable sets we’ve ever owned. Tons of fun to build, and as each part does so much the level of interest from my kids as we built was immense. It’s the first ever time I’ve had to send them out of the room because they drove me bats! I couldn’t build it quicker than they were taking it away to play with it.

Jokerland is a set recommended for age 8+ set with 1037 pieces which go together to form the Batmobile and all of the renamed fairground attractions. There are 8 fabulous minifigures in this set with lovely accessories.

There are a total of five minifigures in the set: Iron Man MK 43, Captain America, Vision, Black Widow, and Ultimate Ultron. We’ve seen Iron Man MK 43 already in The Hulk Buster Smash (76031) and the Attack on Avengers Tower (76038).

Captain America is first and here in his all new Age of Ultron suit. And right off the bat, I’m loving his look. I wasn’t a fan of the first Avengers movie suit, and the Lego mini figure wasn’t my favourite. Here however, we have something amazing. With very dark blue from top to bottom, Captain America comes with printing on his torso piece and back. …One of the Best Superhero Sets I’ve Found…

I am a 21 yr old college student, and I really enjoyed building this set. I would recommend it to anyone over 7. Any younger might have trouble with the wings and the truck. This was one of the better lego sets I’ve seen. There were very few dull spots in the build, and it took me a few hours from start to finish with my full focus. It also looks nice displayed on my desk.

Time: 2 1/2 hours from start to finish
Price: I paid the full $80 pricetag in store, and I thought it was well worth it. It’s cheaper on Amazon.

Durability: My nieces (6 and 7) and my nephew (9) all played with it once I had finished building it. They lost a few of the pieces that were meant to be removed, and it took us a while to find them, but that’s just legos. They had no trouble at all playing with the set without breaking it. I wouldn’t recommend throwing it or anything, but it stands up well to calm play. (Little kids running around “flying”) We’re going to pretend I don’t also run around flying it.

Features: The back of the truck has a piece that can be compressed to make the truck explode (three pieces fly apart, leaving the back open to see the Vision in his chamber inside). The truck is easy to put together afterwards. You can make Black Widow (or any figure with the normal hands) hang from a wire on the underside of the plane which is released from a button on the top of the jet. This set comes with multiple guns (shoot the one-wide pegs). They shoot well, but you will lose them. All of them. Don’t worry. It comes with extras.

The Captain America figure on his epic motorcycle might just be the most epic looking motorcycle covering I’ve seen in a set. It does the film justice, and it rolls very smoothly along carpets and hard floors. The back and front of the quinjet have compartments, and the underside can be opened at the press of a button to let you release the motorcycle. This entire set is very true to the scene in Age of Ultron that featured the quinjet. It has most of the features you could possibly get from that scene. The Iron Man helmet opens to reveal Tony Stark’s face. That was a nice surprise.

Likes:
– Challenging and interesting to build
– Comes with a lot of good figures (Black Widow, Iron Man, Captain America, Ultron, and the Vision)
– Durable for play and delightful for display
– Neat features (such as wire drop and break-apart truck)
– Fun for most ages
– True to the movie (most features you would need to reenact and create your own epic superhero scenes are included)
– Detailed: there are quite a few (8) wing flaps that can be moved up and down or side to side to imitate the plane landing.
– Landing: There are wheels on the undercarriage for easier display and play.

So you have to think ahead if you actually want to finish them at the same time instead of having a long repetitive process.) I only knew to make them at the same time from building the Milano set.

First up is the Iron Man MK 43 suit. It is new for this year and if you read our review of the Iron Man vs. Ultron (76023) set, you’ll notice some small differences. He has the usual red and gold printing on front and back of the torso and on the front of the legs. The mask is the same mold as previous Iron Man minifigures but there are some black outline printing. The Tony Stark head piece is the same as previous versions. He also comes with a separate black hair piece. The accessories included are the trans-light blue studs and round bricks to resemble the suit thrusters. Iron Man MK 43 will be in two other Age of Ultron sets for this wave.

Thor makes another appearance in the LEGO Super Heroes sets with an updated look. The front and back of the torso armor printing is a little different than when we first saw him in the previous movie version with the legs being plain blue. The red cape that he wears is made of the new fabric that we’ve been seeing lately. Today, we are taking a trip into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Today’s post is all about a brand new set, just introduced for 2015. LEGO’s new Marvel Superheroes themed Attack on Avengers Tower! This set was officially released on March 1st, but honestly, it captured our attention last year, when pics were leaked that featured almost all of the upcoming 2015 sets. Our first glimpse of the set came by the way of a close cropped snapshot of an early release catalog. Fortunately, we have better pics now. Check this set out:

I’m sure you probably already suspect why this set would have captured our interest, considering its final form. But hang on… We’ll get to that! Let’s start with a brief review of the set. First, have a look at the box. As you can see, it is called Attack on Avengers Tower icon.

The set is advertised to include 515 parts, and features 5 minifigures. Among the 5 included minifigures you will find standard issue Thor and Iron-man. The Iron Man included here is Iron Man MK43. A black hair piece is included, so you can play with Iron Man as Tony Stark with his mask off.

The remaining three LEGO Minifigures are Iron Legion (the set includes 2), and an Ultron MK1. If you are unfamiliar with the MK nomenclature in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, MK1 means this is Ultron Mark 1, or Ultron version 1. If you have seen the preview… Read more here

…Great Set For Play and Display!…

Great set! This was $60 at Target, plus tax, and it was worth it (especially since I bought it with my birthday money). I am the sort of hopeless, introverted geek who, at eighteen years old, still plays with little plastic bricks, and this set scores in all categories.

Cons: (bad stuff first) Lots of stickers and little spare parts. I keep the spare parts in a Ziploc bag which fits inside the tower if I roll it up enough. Also, the windows tend to fall off.

Pros: Everything else! It’s a nice-sized, though not huge, set with loads of details and features and some great parts. There are lots of stud shooters (yay!) and other stuff besides. The bottom windows fold out and open launching ramps for the Iron Legion armors, and the middle windows blow out so Ultron can escape. There are hinges so the tower can open for play inside or close for display. There is ample room for all the minifigs included (even for all five Avengers, if you want) and the included minifigs ARE fantastic. Ultron (the whole point of everything) seems to be built out of ruined armors and spare parts, and his demonic golden face is terrifying (just like the one in the Age of Ultron trailer). The Iron Legion armors are very cool, with their plasma heads underneath their helmets and their fantastic navy blue and white paint schemes. Thor has a new soft red cape, two faces, and a navy blue outfit with cool armor, and Iron Man has extra hair and two Tony Stark faces underneath his helmet. His armor has shiny gold printing and is wonderfully detailed. All in all, a great buy for sixty bucks, but you may want some more Ultron troopers for a real battle..
