I’m seeing The Force Awakens in 48 hours, but some of the 2016 LEGO Star Wars sets arrived from our friends in Billund yesterday (with a confirmation from LEGO today that we can go ahead and post our review prior to the movie’s release on Thursday), so we’ll start our pre-movie rush of Star Wars LEGO set reviews with 75140 Resistance Troop Transporter, due out in January.

There’s no hiding my deep love for Disney’s Frozen. Don’t believe me? Read my review of 41062 Elsa’s Sparkling Ice Castle, one of my favourite LEGO sets from last year. LEGO has upped their game in 2016 with two new Frozen sets under the Disney Princess theme and they’re both excellent offerings for anyone still suffering from Frozen-fever. It is with great pleasure that I present my review of 41068 Arendelle Castle Celebration!

Arendelle Castle Celebration is based on Frozen Fever, a short animated feature that takes place several months after the events of Frozen. It is now springtime in the idyllic fairy tale kingdom of Arendelle and Queen Elsa has planned a massive birthday celebration for Princess Anna but tragedy strikes as Elsa comes down with a cold.

Determined to power through to ensure that Anna has the perfect day, Elsa tries her best to fight off her worsening cold, which as you can imagine for someone with magical ice powers, conjures all sorts of strange events, mishaps and laughs. It’s also funny because in the smash hit Let It Go Elsa famously sings “the cold never bothered me anyway”..... Read more here

LEGO Disney Arendelle Castle Celebration 41068 Building Kit Review – Toptoysforchristmas2016

Arendelle Castle Frozen set is the number of characters and accessories included in the set & as many as you could expect to find in two different sets. Elsa, Anna and Olaf are there, as are 3 of the mischievous snowgies. Additionally, you get ice skates, glasses, cupcakes, a cup, a party invitation, a 2-tiered birthday cake and plenty more features littered throughout the castle. There is no doubting that children get plenty of bang for their buck here.

The build difficulty is quite simple, which is surprising considering the level of detail in certain parts of the castle. This is achieved by the inclusion of several larger customised pieces requiring little construction. This has clearly been done to include a younger audience, reflecting the demographic of many Frozen fans, but older LEGO enthusiasts that enjoy building their sets as much as playing with them might be left slightly disappointed with how quickly they can put everything together.

This collection manages to capture the magical feeling that Frozen delivered on so wonderfully, and does so in a fun and inviting way... Read more here

…Super cute Frozen Fever theme, not too difficult for younger ones…

Not a very difficult build if you have older children, but it has the Frozen factor definitely going for it! The majority of the castle is a lot of big bricks, pretty specialized to make it buildable for smaller kids. Not really thrilled with the stickers either. I kinda think putting that 12 years on the cover is a stretch. My kids like the Frozen Fever outfits and the snowgies, we were surprised there wasn’t more than four in the package(and I think we got lucky on the fourth little guy!) The slide gets used a lot, but the door upstairs has been removed, they said it gets in the way. It took my 6 and 9 year olds less than an hour to finish, which was a drawback, but they have been playing with it endlessly ever since, major plus! We ordered ours on the Lego website for points towards more Lego! All in all, it is a great build, just a little pricey.

This is the second Frozen set to feature Anna in her mountain-cold gear, and the only set currently with Kristoff and Sven. I have a conflicted relationship with this set. The parts-cost ratio is off (17 cents per part, well above the 10 cent average). My initial reaction was that the magenta on the sleigh was out of place and jarring. That said, the set grew on me as I built it. Also, I’m a big fan of Sven.

The box comes with parts divided into two numbered bags. The first bag includes Oaken’s Trading Post and the hay bale/tree, along with Anna. Bag two includes the sleigh and Kristoff. The sled rails, in Dark Blue for the first time, are free-floating in the box along with Sven in his bag.... Read more here

This set was absolutely adorable! The reindeer Sven was so, so cute. My 4 year-old was most excited about him. He was also a good size compared to the figures. His back has a block sized hole in it in order to fit the reigns to the sleigh, so he isn’t quite as cute without the sleigh. The building and “barn” like structure are pretty cute as well, however the reindeer is definitely the best part of this set!

It is a very cute lego set. Oaken’s shop is a bit too small but the sleigh is really cool! The other building, I assume is the barn , does not look like the barn though. The color is adorable , white and blue for snow , ice , and hot pink for Anna, perfect combination for cuteness. Review: 75103 First Order Transporter – Brickset

75103 First Order Lego Star Wars Transporter was by far my most anticipated set of the new range. I took an instant liking to the purely utilitarian design of the vehicle and the minifigure selection is absolutely outstanding, with plenty of opportunity for army building. The inclusion of Captain Phasma, one of the most intriguing and exciting characters from Star Wars: The Force Awakens is also an enormously appealing factor.

Now that I have built the set I am even more delighted. This model is absolutely packed with functions, details and it looks superb in my opinion, although that depends in part on whether or not you like the source material. I certainly do and this set seems to be just about a perfect representation of the landing craft, so what’s not to like?... Read more here

75103 First Order Transporter™ Review – Eurobricks

My first foray into Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens sets. Standing in the aisle of a local toy shop, crouched down next to the shelf (clearly designed to lure in wide-eyed kids) casting my eyes over each set on display. This was all charade though – I knew which one I wanted and nothing was going to persuade me otherwise. Today I am going to be doing a review of Lego Star Wars Transporter 75103 – The First Order Troop Transport. Weighing in at just shy of 800 pieces, this is the third largest set of the wave. Packs 7 new minifigures based on the film, and has a fair few play features to boot.

I really like the new box art, not just Lego but across all of the merchandise. I have bought a number of Hasbro products and the red and black packaging is striking and eye catching. …Exciting design for a gray box…

I bought most of the Lego sets at midnight. They were the reason I was there. But I did choose to pass on a few and this was one of them. A couple days later I went back out to pick through inventory to find returns and items that got misplaced in the mayhem. There were several of these left on the shelf but the same could be said for several of the new sets. So I took a closer look at it and noticed some of the figures were cool and unique and figured what the heck I’ll get it anyways since the inventory of other items such as Black Series 6″ were sadly low on release night and I had a few extra bucks to blow.

I let it sit by the side as I built a couple of the others and finally got to where I didn’t want to open the Xwing or Millennium Falcon since I plan to do those with my son and the other sets were small. So this one was the obvious choice. The other review is correct in that this set is boring to look at. That’s why I didn’t buy it originally. And I don’t dispute much of what was said in the other review either, I just don’t feel as strongly about it I suppose. Cons: Bland. Popup gunner doesn’t rise high enough. Did I mention Bland? Pros: Nice details added (technical not really visual). Forward top deck removable for ease of access to cargo area. Control over front bay door by turning knob in back. Lots of figures. Lots of extra studs for shooting.

Overall I think they did well with what they had to work with. Probably not the Lego Star Wars Transporter best design to pick but right now wish so little known of the movie they could only give so much and the other sets offer a lot in that way (some new, lots of flashy visual). I would give it 3.5 stars but that’s not an option so I’ll round up here because 4 stars, according to Amazon, means “I like it” and I really do. It’s solid, a decently fun build, and despite some drawbacks it offers a lot of creativity when trying to make a gray box on wheels exciting. Would I recommend it? Well I would to collectors and star wars nuts who are into this sort of thing. If you’re looking for something to buy little timmy for his birthday, keep browsing.

We are entering another season of set releases so we can start bringing you some reviews of the brand new Summer sets. The Star Wars wave is relatively small as a result of the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII sets, consisting of only six sets, but it nevertheless includes some highly anticipated models.

75094 Imperial Lego Star Wars Shuttle Tydirium is one such model. The Lambda Class Shuttle is an instantly recognisable vehicle but it has not quite achieved the iconic status of the X-Wing, Death Star or Millennium Falcon and has therefore not been recreated at this scale since 2005’s 7264 Imperial Inspection.

Set design has advanced enormously in the past ten years and it really shows here, so I am delighted to see an updated version, particularly since five superb minifigures are included to crew this stolen ship... Read more here

Review: 75094 Imperial Shuttle Tydirium – Eurobricks

Let’s start, hey ho! The Imperial Shuttle is a staple in the Star Wars series, I guess. It was in Episode VI a few times, and it’s been released by Lego a couple of times – the classic 2001 one, which I didn’t even realize was a set; the 2005 one, which had a bunch of cool minifigs, kind of like an early-era battle pack; the UCS one, which to this day, has resulted in 42 deaths by falling and crushing people in the head; two mediocre mini ones, which I can’t even create a comment about; and, of course, the brilliant mini one from 2004…ah, how I love it. Here’s a hint – you’ll be seeing one of these again. You can put your bets in now as to which one it is. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

… Fantastic Lego set!…

I have built several Lego Star Wars sets with my sons, including the Death Star I and II, R2D2, and the Millennium Falcon being some of the bigger sets. This Lego Star Wars Shuttle is right up there in terms of build quality and look, even though it’s a slightly smaller set compared to the larger ones. One great thing about this set is that it is both fun to play with, and it also looks awesome on display.

The set has 6 packets in total with 937 pieces in total. It has characters of Han Solo, Leia, Chewbacca, and two rebel soldiers. The wings are the main part of the body, and are fun to build. The wings can be open up completely, folded all the way like in the pictures for this listing, and they can also be folded down to work as a stand (though the unit is not very stable in this position). It has two missile launching mechanisms, one on each side. A simple press of a button fires these out as shown in the video review towards the end.

I would say this is appropriate for kids 7 and older, even though it says 9-14 years as the appropriate age. There are one or two steps that I thought require a little help from an adult, but otherwise it is fairly straightforward. Since most of the set is made up of the wings, you aren’t really attaching small parts to make up the entire set – I guess this makes it easier for 7-8yr olds to build this set. Overall, the set looks terrific once it’s built. I wish Lego comes out with more new Star Wars sets like this.

Star Wars Lego 75104: Kylo Ren’s Command Shuttle (review) – Geekster

We don’t know yet what Kylo Ren’s Command Shuttle will do in the movie and the importance of its owner is shrouded in mystery. Who is Kylo Ren? And what’s with the strange lightsaber? His crew might tell us something about his importance. Included in the box is half a general staff including General Hux, a First Order Stormtrooper Officer, a First Order Officer and two extra crew members.

Is Kylo Ren the successor to Darth Vader? Is he a bastard son of Emperor Palpatine or one of Han and Leia Solo’s children that chose the dark side of the Force? We can see a wooded environment on the box. Does this mean we’re on Kashyyk, the home planet of Chewbacca? (Remember “Chewie we’re home” from the trailer.) Or is it Endor? There has been a great deal of speculation surrounding several of the new characters in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but few have inspired such intrigue as Kylo Ren, the mysterious villain of the movie. 75104 Kylo Ren’s Command Shuttle is, suitably, the only set to feature the much-anticipated Kylo Ren minifigure and his inclusion is probably the most appealing aspect of the model for many people. New Star Wars Darkside Lego spaceship!?! Kylo Ren mini figure!?! Count me in. Spaceship!!!! This is likely the same ship we catch a rear view glance of during the space scene in the second trailer. The mega long wings are preposterously awesome and prove amazing in the Lego build. From the trailer the wings appear to articulate like the imperial shuttle from ROTJ – the EOM Lego model does not have this functionality (hacks to enable already can be seen online), although the top of the wings fold down with a clever mechanism – more on this later.

The completed set is rather massive at full extension and occupies a volume that seems to exceed the piece count due to the ginormous wings. Most impressive. It is primarily built out of (very-very) dark grey colored bricks and makes the ship more ominous than it seems on the box and website photos. The black front with three smoked clear 1×2’s certainly stands out. The fore-to-aft balance is good and sits upright on a flat surface (lower wings need to folded in for landing/docking).

The body section has three opening sections- two on top (one each fore and aft) and one underneath (fore gangway – likely the one Kylo Ren descends in the Comicon reel). All of the mini figures can fit (albeit snugly) in the interior (two seated and two standing fore and two seated aft). Relatively spartan interior – the single pilot environment gets the most detail attention. There are three total control panel flatties. Clips for stowing Kylo’s hilt and blade are located on the underside of the aft compartment door. A few hinged pieces create the angles required for the contoured ship body shape. The two rear engines are hefty and an exterior highlight..

Our week of LEGO Star Wars reviews continues today with Lego Star Wars X-Wing Fighter from the Force Awakens. Poe Dameron and his T-70 X-wing starfighter have featured prominently in all of the teasers and trailers for the new movie, so there doesn’t seem to be much risk of any spoilers in this set (that, and it’s been out in stores since September).

Poe’s X-wing comes in 5 numbered bags, with a 120-page instruction booklet. You start with the generic Resistance pilot, ground crew staff, and ground crew equipment, followed by the first bit of the X-wing’s main body. Sixteen steps in, you’re already starting to build the Technic mechanism that will enable the S-foils to open and close…. Read more here

Review: 75102 Poe’s X-Wing Fighter – Brickset

We continue our look at The Force Awakens sets today with Lego Star Wars X-Wing Fighter, which was perhaps the most anticipated of the range, certainly by me. However, whereas CapnRex101’s excellent reviews of other sets have been full of interesting insight and speculation about the forthcoming film, you won’t read anything like that in this one because I know very little about it. Instead, I’ll simply look at the set from a LEGO fan’s perspective.

Three minifigures are included in the set, along with droid BB-8. First, we have an unnamed resistance X-Wing pilot, attired in dark orange overalls. The level of printed detail on the torso is impressive. The helmet is absolutely fantastic: it’s covered with fine printing and the trans-yellow visor is moulded into it. The back is also printed. … who grew up watching Star Wars since I was like 4, there was no way I could resist …

I’m a 25 year old guy who grew up watching Star Wars since I was like 4, there was no way I could resist getting as many of the new toys that my wallet could put up with. I honestly cannot remember the last time I put a Lego model together; it has to have been at least 10-15 years. That being said, it took a good 4 hours to construct it since I made sure I did not miss any pieces per step.

The finishing product was truly amazing. I cannot remember Lego models being so detailed. The S-foils easily split due to the mechanism that’s constructed, and the ‘lasers’ surprisingly shoot a good 10-15 feet depending on your trajectory. All in all, I can honestly say that this is by far my favorite new Star Wars product to date and I would highly recommend it to not only fans of Lego but all fans of Star Wars.

I purchased this set from the store with a bullseye which had it for $49.99. At this price I considered it a steal, but even at it’s $59.99 MSRP it’s not a bad deal, when you consider what you get.

First off though, this is a fantastic ‘little’ set (little when you consider what it’s representing). It has great functionality, including double sliding doors, falling tree, cam-driven ‘exploding wall’, cam driven tip-out light saber bin, and a small (what I’m calling) projectile launcher, where you flick a piece behind the doors and it scatters some 1×1 black circular plates to infinity and beyond – seriously, you’re never finding all of them if you launch them into the open. The exploding wall works better than I thought it would, and the debris launcher works perhaps better than it should – although it is big enough that you can place a minifigure in the space and launch them instead.

In terms of value, while it may seem like a lot to pay for a ~400 piece set, if you take the market value of the Kylo Ren minifig (~$20), the Finn minifig (~$15), throw in TR-8R (wildly popular) a second Stormtrooper, and Maz Kanata, and all of a sudden you’ve got $40-$50 worth of minifigs + 400 pieces, and a good amount of them an uncommon dark sand.

Overall, a great buy, with great play value, and good value for $.
