LEGO is a building toy, not an action figure line. It’s hard to tell with recent sets, but it’s true. One of the most difficult things for licensed LEGO sets is to capture the where and what just as much as who. Star Wars was the low-hanging fruit… there are so many things to capture. Vehicles like the X-Wing and Jedi Star Fighter have a certain look that give something to build. Some places, like Jabba’s Palace or Cloud City can provide a very solid where, in some ways as iconic as the ships.

While characters are important, capturing these other things really makes it feel like Star Wars (maybe in part because that’s the cool thing in a sea of sub-par acting, who knows). When it comes to a license like Lord of the Rings, movies that are so intrinsically character-based, building sets that are anything more than glorified battle packs becomes much tougher.... Read more here

…This set is MASSIVE……

If you decide to buy this set, make sure you have a large area to put it. It takes up approximate shelf space of 20 inches across by 15 inches deep. The tower in this set is about 10.5 inches tall. While this set is modular and sections can be removed, you won’t want to display anything but the entirety of it all! 🙂

PACKAGING
This set is so big it requires FOUR instruction manuals. The instruction manuals are sealed to a sheet of cardboard, meaning no paperweights are required. This set also contains NINE bags of LEGO bricks. The bags are numbered 1-9, you only need to open one at a time to construct the set.

The minifigures are spread throughout the bags, so this set goes together rather quickly. Bags 1 and 2 construct the entrance, bag 3 constructs the stairs and the left rounded corner, bag 4 the right rounded corner. Bags 5 and 6 construct the tower, Bag 7 constructs the wall, Bags 8 and 9 construct the throne room.

BONUS:
Included with this set is an orange plastic brick separator!

MINIFIGURES:
This set includes 8 minifigures, including Gimli, King Théoden, Haldir and Aragorn. Also included are four Uruk-hai. Three of the Uruk-hai have helmets, two have chest plates shields and swords, one has a battle-axe, The Uruk-hai without armor has a torch. Gimli has a helmet, one great axe and one axe. King Théoden has ornate armor (helmet and chest plate), along with a round shield and sword. He rides a horse. Haldir has a red cape and a long bow. Aragorn has a sword. Also included is a rat.

Note about the horse: A special feature of this horse is that it’s back half (legs and tail) is able to pivot, along with its head. This allows the horse to rear up on its hind legs. One thing not apparent (and a nice feature) is that the horse WILL balance on a level surface, even with a minifigure riding it.

PLAY FEATURES:
With a set this big, I’m going to miss a few details. I’ll try my best to describe everything.
The entire outer wall and inner wall are walkways to place minifigures. On the exterior of the wall is a minifigure catapult (meant to let them jump?) On top of the outer wall is one small (standard) catapult. The catapult is mounted to a 2×4 brick, and can be removed and placed anywhere. Included with the catapult are six grey cylinders. As shown on the box, there is a siege ladder that breaches the wall.

The doors on the wall are large enough that the horse and minifigure can ride through. On the straight section of wall, there is a lever on the inside that will “destroy” it. Fortunately the wall is sturdy enough that it will not break when transporting it.

At the top of the tower is a spy glass. The tower itself has a three piece folding ladder, for the minifigure’s safety. At the bottom of the tower is an empty box with lid. There really isn’t anything to put inside of it.

The inner wall (top of the throne room) has a bridge to the outer wall. Other than the walkway, the throne room really doesn’t have a roof. On the inside of the throne room is the throne, two racks for weapons (two new style spears and two new style swords included). Also in the throne room is a large green banner, a table, two stools, two goblets, a plate and a drumstick.

DECORATIONS:
This set includes the new “stone” brick, which looks like plates stacked together. Also included in this set are a number of torches and a pair gold and green flags. As mentioned previously there is a green banner in the throne room. Surprisingly, there are only 6 stickers in this set. Four go on the tower (to look like mossy stones), one goes on the banner, and the other is on the throne. The stickers are rather large, and easy to place.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
This set is meant to be paired with Urak-Hai Army (9471). Without it, it is a very large set with (relatively speaking) few minifigures. Even if you don’t like LOTR but still enjoy LEGO bricks, you might consider buying this set simply for the number of large bricks and number of weapons and armor contained. The recommended age for this set is 10-14. I would say that is age appropriate, given the number of pieces and the amount of time it takes to construct. Also there a some tricky parts in construction, too much force on the wall can break it. If you enjoy LOTR and/or LEGO Bricks and have the space, time and money, this set is a must buy.

Have I made a joke lately about my proud history of timely reviews? Probably, given the sheer numbers of reviews that I have done well after the set was brand new and the movie in an out of theaters (or DVD), I probably have. To make matters worse, I often take the pictures right away, and then get busy before writing the review.

Case in point, Escape from Mirkwood Spiders, a set of pictures I took last year and uploaded to Flickr for comments. In the run of Hobbit sets, this set, along with Barrel Escape, stand out simply because they aren’t in the first movie, they appear somewhere later in the whole thing. Presumably, as this set includes Legolas, and he’s been shoehorned in to the second (and third) movies, it will probably show up in the upcoming “The Desolation of Smaug.”

Given that spider attacks are something of a thing in the series in general, it wasn’t surprising that they’d show up here. Though somehow, I doubt they’re the high fantasy, talking sort that Bilbo ran in to. All of that being said, how does this $30 set stack up in a world where the $30 sets often have been the stars of their line?... Read more here

The LEGO The Hobbit Escape From Mirkwood Spiders (79001) is the second smallest set in the Hobbit line. It contains 298 pieces and retails for $29.99 which is $0.10/piece. This set is one of the two Special The Hobbit Trilogy Preview Sets along with the Barren Escape (79004). The reason is because the scenes in these particular sets are not in An Unexpected Journey, but in the next movie, The Desolation of Smaug. The set contains two numbered bags and one instruction booklet.

There are four exclusive minifigures in the set: Tauriel, Legolas Greenleaf, Fili the Dwarf, and Kili the Dwarf. Tauriel a warrior Silvan Elf and the head of the Elven guard of Mirkwood. The torso and leg printing shows here wearing a dark green and brown tunic which she uses to help her blend with the forest. She has a double-side head that shows her stern and angry faces. Also, her ears are attached to the hairpieces and lines up pretty well to the head. For Tauriel’s weapons, although she can use a bow and arrow as well as daggers, her weapons of choice in the set are the daggers. …Nice Hobbit preview set for the Desolation of Smaug……

This is a nice little $30 lego set that features two Mirkwood trees, two spiders, and four mini figures, Fili, Kili, Tauriel, and Legolas. There are quite a few unique pieces to this set I really enjoyed, such as the spider web, two spider sacs (which you can put mini figures in and hang from the tree), mushrooms, skulls, bones, vines, and mini spiders.

My favorite thing about the set is the glow in the dark pieces used for the spider eyes and the mushrooms, and I also like the spider net sacs which you can put the figures in and hang from the tree. I also think the mushroom piece is pretty neat. The spiders themselves are pretty cool, they have a good shape and look to them and I like how you can adjust the legs on them. If any of you got the LotR Shelob lego set, think of these as miniatures of Shelob.

Overall this was a fun set to build, but only took about an hour or so to build. It has 298 pieces and cost me $29.99 at a local store. It was actually one of the more difficult sets to build just because a lot of the pieces are all black and are similar shape, it just took a little longer to build, thats all. I should mention there two moveable pieces in this set. First, there is pin you can pull and you can knock the larger tree over. And second, there is a little hole you can put a mini spider in and then push a brick to shoot the spider out.

The minifigures themselves are great, the hair pieces are nice, and I like Kili comes with double swords and Tauriel comes with double elf knives as well. Fili comes with a bow and arrow, and Legolas comes with one elf knife and a bow and arrow. For now, if you want these figures, this is the only set that has them.

If I had to pick a bad thing about this set is that I wish it came with more of the red leaf pieces to decorate the tree. It only came with two, and it makes the tree look bare, but maybe that was intentional, I havent seen what Mirkwood trees looks like in the Hobbit yet and we wont know until we see Part two in Desolation of Smaug. Thats right, this set is a preview set, you wont see this scene until the 2nd movie hits in Dec 2013. Anyways, I wish there were more red leaf pieces and instead of getting an extra bow and arrow or a couple of other pieces, i would have liked the leaves instead.

But other than that, this is a great set. Buy this if your a LotR/ Hobbit Lego fan and really like spiders or the mini figures. Out of all the Hobbit lego sets I own so far, this is probably my least favorite, the best going to An Unexpected Gathering and I like Riddles for the Ring better too. Overall I give this set 4.5 out of 5 stars, 4 minifigures, 2 spiders, a bunch of small unique pieces, but the lack of red leaves bring it down a notch.

LEGO was kind enough to send us a copy of 79007 The Battle at the Black Gate for review, the middle-tier set in the second big wave of Lord of the Rings sets. I genuinely liked the Weathertop set that occupies the same price point, even with its absurd flick-fires. Of course, battle is a bit of a misnomer, since I think they normally involve more people than a pickup game of basketball.

There actually was a battle at the Black Gate, in Return of the King, which was a distraction so that a couple of Hobbits could throw a ring in some lava. The Black Gate itself was also featured in The Two Towers, in one of the cooler little tricks of cinematography where we Rudy and the kid that thought a video game was a baby toy in Back to the Future II hid under a cloak in a different part of the screen than you were looking. In truth, the vast majority of the detail for the gate was in that little scene, since it showed trolls pulling chains and people going through them... Read more here

The summer wave of Lord of the Rings sets are skewed towards the high end of the price-range, with 79007 The Battle at the Black Gate in the middle at $60 USD. It does have a nice price-to-parts ratio, with 656 pieces. Beyond the fact that it’s a Lord of the Rings set, which I admittedly love, I wasn’t too thrilled about this set. After all, LEGO’s Battle at the Black Gate consists of, well, a black gate. And not much of a battle.

The gate has been scaled down nicely enough, though compared to the monstrously large gate seen on the screen in The Return of the King, LEGO’s seems laughably small. Still, that’s forgivable, since I doubt many people would be interested in purchasing a true-to-scale version of what amounts to a big wall (or be able to afford it). …A Great looking and inspired set, but somewhat fragile……

Once built, I have to say, this is really a great looking set. It’s smallish in fact the Lego booklets even encourage buying additional sets to make it larger, which is kind of redundant if you ask me, but it’s almost comparable to the Helms Deep set which is twice as large. The design however is awesome with the black color pattern and the intricate series of spikes.

My real gripe with the set however, is that it’s very fragile, and can be very flimsy when trying to put together. The instructions require you to attach the gates onto the main platform, before the gates are fully built. This makes pressing down on the pieces to attach them very a very delicate task. Several times when building, for me, that gate portion completely fell apart as I was trying to attach a certain piece. It was very frustrating. Even when fully built, the model is still a bit wobbly, and doesn’t feel like it’s completely solid. This is very disappointing, because, like said, it’s a really cool looking set.

As for the minifig selection, you get a good group, but not as big as you’d expect for a set this size. The inclusion of two animals, a horse and an eagle, is most likely the reason for this. But we get Gandalf in his White incarnation finally, and Aragorn in slightly more kingly attire (the other sets make him so scruffy you’d almost think he was one of the villains). Then finally, the very obscure character The Mouth of Sauron. Because his part was cut from the Jackson movie (tho I believe it’s included in the special editions). You might think he’s a Nazgul, but he’s not. Just a mortal warrior who speaks for Sauron. He’s really a great looking figure, with a menacing, Joker-like grin.

In all. Not the best of the Lego LOTR sets. It’s fragility sets it back a point for me. Spend your money on Helms Deep or The Mines of Moria first. However, it is an inspired set, with an intricate and great looking design.

When I first heard about the #79008 LEGO Lord of the Rings Pirate Ship Ambush set it took me a moment to remember where a pirate ship fit into the story of the Lord of the Rings. Then I recalled the ghosts and Peter Jackson’s cameo in the movies and it all came back to me. Frankly, there are very few scenes the ship appears in, especially when you do a marathon of watching all the movies in their extended editions. …A delight for Lego fans and LOTR fans alike…..

I just finished building this one, and wow, what project. The flagship (so to speak) of the second wave of LOTR Lego sets, this is definitely for fans of more complex builds. At least I found putting all the little pieces together a bit of a challenge. I had a few minor problems with the sail assembly and a few times I had to backtrack because I misread the pictures in the booklet, but personally, that’s what I enjoy about Lego–the challenge and personal involvement.

Tho, to be completely honest, the real stars of the show, as always, are the mini-figs, and wow, what a selection you get with this set. You get the three main characters, a good representation of the Army of the Dead, a couple of Orcs with their own battle wagon, and to top things off, they included a Cosair Pirate as well. Needless to say, one of the most generous selections of mini-figs I’ve seen yet. Also, if your a fan of little tiny accessories–treasure chests, wine bottles, loafs of bread, gold coins, spare weapons–there’s plenty of that included too.

In short, a really worthwhile set. The hundred dollar price tag is more than justified. If your a LOTR fan, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it. It’s one of the better sets I’ve seen, and that’s saying a lot.

I’m very conflicted about this review. I’m going to try very hard to judge this set on it own merits, but I may veer off into a mini rant about the movie from time to time. I’ll try to keep it focused on how the set and flick pertain to one another, but I’ll apologize in advance if when I stray from the path. One way or another, this is going to contain spoilers so keep that in mind before you proceed and once more unto the bricks.

I said I was going to try, not that I’d try very hard. I make no apologies for my opinion of the film. I did not enjoy it, or at least not as much as I feel I could have. I had no choice in seeing it other than in 3D (which I have no use for) at 48 FPS at my local theater, so we bought our tickets as soon as they went on sale and continued looking forward to it. I felt the combination completely ruined the entire movie for me and I want to see it again, at home at a standard frame rate with hope it will be more enjoyable... Read more here

Continuing our Hobbit set reviews, today we review one of the more interesting sets in the line, Attack of the Wargs (79002). This along with the other sets are scheduled to be released November 27, 2012 but I found them at Walmart after Black Friday. This set contains 400 pieces and retails for $49.99, which comes to $0.12/piece. You get one instruction booklet, three numbered bags, and two separately bagged Wargs.

There are five minifigures included in the set, Thorin Oakshield, Bifur the Dwarf, Yazneg, and two Hunter Orcs, with one that could be Fimbul the Hunter. Thorin has some extremely nice blue printing on both sides of the torso, especially the printing for his belt. He has a double-sided head with the same stern/angry look as we’ve seen as the other Hobbit sets... Read more here

…AWESOME! Another Lovely set from LEGO-Hobbit….

This set contains five minifigs, two Wargs (wolf-like-creatues), one big tree and two rock-like structures. Coming to the minifigs, the two dwarf minifigs (Thorin and Bifur) are amazing. The details on them, especially the hair-piece , is beautiful. (In the movie, Thorin carries an oak-branch as a shield; would have been awesome if LEGO designed one shield like that for Thorin in this set!). The Yazneg minifig is scary-looking , but very nice! His face printing is very nice and his shoulder-armor (or whatever it is) is superb! And when you fit his bone-axe in his hand, nothing looks more menacing (other than the Wargs)!There are two Hunter-orcs in this set. Both are exactly the same. The face looks cool and the printing on their torso is not-bad.

The Wargs simply rock! They are the main reason I bought this set and I am NOT disappointed! The best part is their head, which is very nicely detailed. One small complaint I have is that the body of the wargs has been made smooth (like that in the LEGO horse and bear ). I wish LEGO would have given a hairy body instead. That would have been more natural. (Around the Warg’s head, there is detailing which looks like hair. Same detailing should have made on the body).

There’s a huge tree in this set which is very majestic and beautiful. But I would have been more happier if this tree had more branches and foliage. (All the trees that LEGO gives with it’s sets hardly have enough leaf-pieces, except for two or three). But , still, inspite of me saying that, I loved the tree!

There are two rock-like structures in this set. One is like a rock-ledge where Yagnez and his warg stand on. The other smaller one has something like a catapult, for throwing rocks. Instead of these rock-structures, it would have been better if LEGO had given a minifig or two (of a Hunter-orc). I would have liked this set a lot more if they had included the White-Orc minifig (forgot his name from the movie). In the end, I would just say that I’m crazy about this set. Simply LOVE the wargs, minifigs and the Tree. In the near future, gonna buy at least one more of this set, if not more!

REVIEW: LEGO 10237 – THE TOWER OF ORTHANC – Jaysbrickblog

It took me awhile to write this review, largely because of how long it took to build this monstrosity. The Tower of Orthanc is the crown jewel of the Lego’s The Lord of The Rings sets. Towering above the rest at 2359 pieces, I knew I had to get my grubby hands on this set as soon as it was announced. This is the closest Lego Lord of the Rings fans will probably come to a UCS-scale set set in JRR Tolkien’s fantastical universe of Orcs, Elves, Dwarves and Hobbits.

I’ll preface this review by revealing that this is the biggest Lego set I have ever owned and built. Upon opening the box, I was treated to a whopping 15 bags of Lego parts, all neatly numbered. Numbered Lego parts bags have been a revelation to fans as they’ve made the building process so much more streamlines and methodical. Lord of the Rings is rich with iconic characters and locations, few more so than the imposing Tower of Orthanc. Therefore, with the revelation of LEGO Lord of the Rings, it seemed inevitable that this setting would eventually make it into a set in some form or another. Few could have imagined that this set is what LEGO would produce.

…Definitive LEGO Lord of the Rings Set….

If you are a Lord of the Rings fan and a LEGO fan, this is the definitive set to get. I am an adult fan of LEGO (AFOL) with quite a collection, and I always rate this set in my Top 5.

PROS

• The set is tall, stable and eye catching. Although the tower can look ‘stocky’ in some of the product photos, in person the set looks nicely proportioned and very tall (if you place Gandalf at the top of the tower and Saruman on the ledge, the size and scale of the set becomes more obvious). Also, the set balances on its base really well. I haven’t ever worried about the tower accidentally falling over from being bumped or knocked.
• The set just looks ‘right’. The LEGO Tower of Orthanc looks almost exactly like the tower (except for the height) – the pieces used and the construction techniques look spot on – and the spires at the top of the tower are perfect.
• The set is heaps of fun to build. Although the Tower of Orthanc is mostly all black pieces, it is actually a really fun build with heaps of interesting building techniques.
• The set takes up less room to display than most LEGO sets. I live in a house with very little space to display my LEGO. Because this tower is vertical with a reasonably small base, I can display it in places where most other Lord of the Rings sets would be too big or wide (like Helm’s Deep).
• The addition of a tree Ent and an Eagle is a nice touch. The tree Ent is a good size in comparison to the tower (possibly a little tall).

CONS

• As others have mentioned, for this price it would have been nice to receive more mini figures (such as Merry and Pippen, or more orcs and uruk-hai).

NOTES – It’s hard to say whether this set would be good for kids. It does have a few play features on the back, and you could re-enact several scenes from the Lord of the Rings movies with just this one set… but at this price I think kids especially would have more fun with playing with several smaller, cheaper sets. My recommendation – this is a 5-star set. If you are a LEGO fan and a Lord of the Rings fan, buy this set! You will not be disappointed. 🙂

While I was fairly hard on the The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in my review of the movie, and wasn’t particularly nice to the the last set I reviewed, Escape from the Mirkwood Spiders… An Unexpected Gathering and it’s feature of Bag End wowed me when I first saw pictures of the set from Toy Fair early last year.

More than that, this scene, along with the interaction between Bilbo and Gollum, that actually felt like Hobbit movie should feel. Instead of wide-eyed adventure and way too much action, we have a hobbit that’s turned upside down trying to figure out why a bunch of dwarves are eating all his food and playing with his knives. It was a good enough that a mini version was turned in to a San Diego Comic Con exclusive this year, for people with more money than good sense.... Read more here

Review: Lego 79003 The Hobbit: An Unexpected Gathering (Bag End) – Brickknight

December Special! The final Hobbit movie comes out in the middle of the month. Unless Peter Jackson has J.R.R. Tolkein’s body dug up and reanimated to write more books, it should be the last we see of Middle Earth on the big screen for quite awhile. I’m a big fan of the Lego LOTR sets and will attempt to review all of them in the next few weeks. As many of these sets are no longer available, I’m going to use a 1-5 rating system where 3 is average and 5 is excellent.

What a set! Most reviews of this set said so about a year ago, but I finally got around to cracking open the box and building it. I can do nothing but wholeheartedly agree. It’s beautiful and so detailed. I don’t own any of the Modular sets but this set seems to be on the level if not exceed those sets in terms of detail. I guess I should acknowledge that this is not technically a Lego Lord of the Rings set, but part of The Hobbit line but obviously it depicts a crucial part of Lord of the Rings as well… Read more here

…Best Lego Set I have Ever Built….

This is an amazing Lego set and I had a ton of fun building it. I am a huge LotR/ Hobbit fan and this is easily the best of the bunch Lego has released for the license. It captures Bilbo’s house wonderfully and there are tons of unique pieces to this set, along with a bunch of details that show a lot of love went into designing this. Such details as a fireplace and chimney, a stovetop with pots, a broom, a lantern, several potions, a treasure chest, plates, food items, a bench, table, I could go on and on. But my favorite detail has to be Bilbo’s table where he writes There and Back Again, along with the book, ink jar, and feathered pen. Really nice touch! I also really like that the front door can be opened along with the front gate. The front door even has a little scratch painted on it where Gandalf wrote on the door to let the dwarves know the house where the meeting with the burglar was to take place. 😉

The minifigures themselves are great. You get Bilbo, Gandalf, Balin, Dwalin, Bofur, and Bombur. I love that Dwalin comes with a large battle hammer, and I like how Lego made Bombur fat with an extra piece, and he also comes with a little sausage and cooking pot. Bofur’s hat and mining pick are awesome as well. Like I said, some really nice touches.

I should mentioned that the top part of Bilbo’s house can easily come off and this was done on purpose so that the inside can be played around with. Thats fine by me, as the house does have a few blocks that will attach the top to a secure fit so that it wont slide off if you move the set

The set came with 652 pieces, and I took my time and spent a late night completing it, probably around 3-4 hours. This was really satisfying to build and was a lot of fun. . Overall, I really did feel I got my $70 worth of Legos and a lot of great minis.

As always I was happy with Amazon, fast shipping and the preorder was sent to me before the official date, so I was really surprised to get it a whole week early.

If I had to nit pick, I wish I got a couple of more tree leaf pieces to make the tree on top of the house a bit more lush, but luckily I have some spare pieces from other sets that I can put in.

Bottom line: If you are a lego and lotr/hobbit fan, and could only pick one set, this is your must have set. No questions ask. Unless you hate the Bag End, you will not be disappointed. I feel Bag End was one of the most iconic things from LotR/ Hobbit and this set really captures that look. Easily my favorite Lego set ever.

The Hobbit – Desolation of Smaug: 79012 Mirkwood Elf Army [Review] – Brothers Brick

79012 Mirkwood Elf Army is a small forest battlement manned (elfed?) by a squadron of 4 wood elves. It’s under siege by a duo of orcs, one of whom rides a warg. With 276 pieces for its $30 price-point, it fares well for a licensed set, and only gets sweeter when you consider that it includes 6 minifigures. It’s the Hobbit equivalent to the Lord of the Rings’ 9471 Uruk-Hai Army.

The box contains 2 numbered bags, a 10×10 octagonal plate with hole, an individually bagged warg (which is new here in dark brown), and one annoyingly crumpled instruction booklet that wouldn’t stay open without weights on the corners. The first numbered bag contains the warg rider, Elf-King Thranduil, and the generic Mirkwood elf, as well as the pieces for the tree-fort — ahem, I mean forest battlement. The forest battlement is a large, brick-built, hollow tree stump, concealing a cubbyhole for a barrel full of green gems — well, one trans-green gem and one trans-green 1×1 round plate. The most interesting part of the trunk is the use of the new 1x3x3 arch, aka the gothic arch, in brown, which is the first time that piece has appeared in brown, and is only the third color currently available. Review: 79012 Mirkwood Elf Army (of Awesome) – FBTB

Turns out, Ambush is $20, Mirkwood is only $30, and Fortress was only $70. Given the recent trends in Lego prices being somewhere between “are you kidding” and “those greedy *bleeps*,” it seems like something is up here. I mean, this set is basically a $30 battle pack with six figures, five of them being generic and the kind of things you want a whole bunch of. What is this, opposite world?

The second movie just came out, and to be honest, I have no idea if this scene is in it, in the extended edition release that’s going to trick us out of $20 next year, or in the third movie that we haven’t even been disappointed in yet. But on the Lego front, there’s a whole lot to love in this wave of sets. After some shaky initial releases, it looks like both The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings sets are hitting their stride. Anyway, let’s see how much value can be pulled out of your $30.

Sometimes I make a comment about how tough a set is to review, either because of its price point, the subject matter, or just the nature of what its trying to show us. Often its a licensed set like this, where I haven’t seen the movie (yet… going to go this weekend and write another hated movie review), like this one. But there is no conflict here… this set, without knowing anything about the movie other than the trailer makes me think it’s based on the Hobbit in much the same way that The Lost World was based on the book of the same name (either one, really).…Read more here

…Great Army Building Set and Fortress Expansion!….

79012 Mirkwood Elf Army was originally released in late November / early December of 2013 with a LEGO Store price of $29.99. It contains 276 pieces, and includes 6 minifigures (4 elves and 2 orcs), a Warg, various accessories (saddle, weapons, ladder, etc…), and pieces to make a section of a fortress wall.

This is an incredible army building set for those interested in increasing their Elven forces, and also does a nice job of including a Warg for the orc’s side (you can never have too many of those). The wall structure is also nice, containing various weapons (some of which even fire). Because the ends of the wall are pegged, they can be fit together with other sets to expand them. In fact, you can fit together two of the Mirkwood Elf Army sets to form a very nice front castle gate, or put together four of them for your own small enclosed fortress.

The one thing I didn’t like about the set is how easily the tree/tower top comes off. Because these are LEGOs, though, you can easily fix that if it bothers you – just build it more securely with some additional pieces. Still, it would have been nice if it had fit together a little more securely from the original design.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars (rounding to 5). Whether you just buy one to bulk up your army or multiple to build an Elven fortress, this set is a lot of fun!

The news that Lord of the Rings was to get a second wave of sets was very well received and the second smallest of the five sets released this year is a highlight for me.

One of the most popular settings from the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy is Rivendell, the home of Elrond and elves under his rule. In this set, 79006 The Council of Elrond, we get our first taste of this magnificent location in LEGO, and it really is a treat, perfectly capturing the area as it appears in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring film, directed by Peter Jackson.

The model includes four lovely Minifigures, one of whom is an exclusive character to this set and two of whom have been updated. With 243-pieces, this set is priced at £29.99 or $29.99, and despite the fact that the ‘price-to-piece’ ratio (which I tend to take with a pinch of salt anyway) is some way out, I believe this set is well worth the price... Read more here

While the Lord of the Rings LEGO line has only been out for a couple of years at this point, it’s still surprising to think that the movies they’re based on are twelve years (Fellowship was released in 2001) old at this point. There’s a lot that’s changed in the years since then, both for LEGO (having more than one licensed line) and the actors involved (remember when people thought Elijah Wood was going to be in everything after these movies).

I remember being in the theater, not yet awed by Fellowship and bought in to the setting that was going on, and thinking about the actors that I knew from other films. Frodo was in that gawd-awful Rob Reiner movie, North. Gimli played Leonardo Di Vinci on Star Trek Voyager (he may have also had some small role in some independent film about an archeologist). The Council of Elrond is a wonderful Lego set, capturing the longest chapter in Tolkien’s great work “The Lord of the Rings.” Rivendell, called the Last Homely House, is a tranquil set which is the scene for the great deliberation of what to do with the One Ring. This set captures the moment stupendously.

The set is modulated into two main portions, the ‘house’ and the ‘dais’. The house has a few stairs leading to its pillared hall, with a tree poking out one side. A tilted roof gives a strong impression of a gold-trimmed roof bespeckled with fallen Fall leaves, and is quite beautiful (even for the plastic medium). A detachable weapon rack is also designed to sit in the hall, as well. The impression of the house is that it is the entrance to a much larger structure, and is modeled very well.

The dais, or platform, has more of a toy quality to it. The platform is octagonal in shape and 14×14 pips, with a focus on a round stone table which is specifically designed for the One Ring, which attempts very strongly to steal the show in presentation. There is strong competition from the Fall-foliage tree placed on the platform with a dry orange and green tint to it. Three ‘swivel’ chairs are places on the platform which allow characters to sit (or in the case of hobbit or dwarven figures, stand) in place. The chairs are constructed in a manner to allow caped figures to sit easily, as well. The platform has two pegs in the lower side to physically attach and detach from the house portion, giving a great sense of continuity to the piece.

The ‘toy quality’ of the platform comes from a hidden flick-piece that has runners under the platform that, when flicked, strike a platform to rise and throw a character of the platform. This is to recreate the scene from The Fellowship of the Ring when Gimli (included) attempts to destroy the Ring with his axe. a hidden Eye of Sauron block (created through the use of stickers) is then revealed once flicked open.

Four minifigs are included: Elrond, Arwen, Gimli, and Frodo Baggins. Elrond is included with a cloth cape that is very easy to put together (perhaps more difficult for a child). A number of long elven swords are included, along with a bow, Sting (Frodo’s short sword) and Gimli’s axe. Three One Rings (it’d stink to lose _that_)were included amid my bags, though I understand that number sometimes varies. Elrond and Arwen’s hairpieces are rubber instead of the usual plastic. The heads are dual-sided, allowing the user to switch Elrond from angry to slightly less angry.

The whole feel of the Council is tranquil, with hidden danger. A large complaint to the set is that it is somewhat small, and leaves the modeler wanting more. I feel the set could have been priced higher (think $70-$90) for something very substantial. As such, I found myself purchasing and identical set to construct the ‘house’ set in reverse, doubling the size of the house while keeping the platform the same size. Doing this gives the set more heft (at twice the cost), but I feel this is quite worth it and it gives Rivendell a needed sense of symmetry.

This set is a perfect accent to a desk (it is displayed on my desk, and fits well in my social studies and philosophy classes) and would make an excellent gift for Tolkien fans or fans of wisdom and counsel (Elrond’s forté).

PROS:

• A beautiful set that is very tranquil.
• Somewhat rare figures like Elrond and Arwen which may be difficult to find elsewhere.
• Pegged modular build allows the platform to be connected to the house or stand apart.

CONS:

• Somewhat small feel, as it seems to give the user a taste of what could have been a truly astonishing set.
• The ‘action content’ is low, since the scene in the book/movie is somewhat calm, as well. this may lower the appeal for younger users who would prefer a siege scene like Moria or Helm’s Deep.
• Four stickers need to be placed, three for the armchairs and one for Sauron’s eye. This requires a certain achievement of dexterity to be done correctly.
